"Capital of Ghana"

Accra with a population of almost 3 million is the capital of Ghana and stretches along the Atlantic Coast.
It was originally built around the port. Its architecture ranges from large and elegant 19th Century colonial buildings to skyscrapers and apartment blocks made of concrete, glass and steel in the 1970s.
The centre of Accra
(Ussher Town, East Ridge, James Town, Osu, West Ridge, Asylum Down) contains the main banks, embassies, the large department stores, museums, the government administration, hotels, etc….
The residential areas are to the north and west of Accra.
The highlights of Accra are the National Museum, the Centre for National Culture, Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the fishing port at James Town and Makola Market, the university of Ghana at Legon is just 14km north of Accra, and its distinctive buildings are set amongst elegant tree-lined gardens that are popular with students and visitors.

"Accra, the capital of Ghana"

Accra is the largest city and the capital in Ghana with a population of 4 mill people (greater Accra region included). The city was first settled in the 15th century when the Ga people came to the area, and has been the capital in Ghana since 1877. The Accra area was known for having ants and anthills, therefor the name Accra.

Ghanaians are a loudmouthed people: As a foreign visitor you will probably notice the shouting way of communication. It's not just to attract attention, but is also done in communication across the streets. It's interesting to hear the Tro-Tro's shared taxis driving by with the ticket collector shouting Accra, Accra, Accra out of the car window. It's sounds like crows.

The pictures are taken with a GPS enabled camera, and you can find the coordinates in many tips. Just start Google Earth and paste in the address, and you will see where it is on the map.

A new Accra for a better Accra? It is a city of low old buildings. Many of them are from the colonial era, and some few tall buildings. Nobody except inhabitants from Accra will honestly say that this is a beautiful city.

"My beloved Accra"

AKWAABA

welcome: you feel always welcome in Accra, it is a never ending entertainment. Working in Accra is being on holidays all the time.

There is no lost time. Each instant is lived intensively, and you don't want to go to sleep because you will loose time.

Accra: the cleanest African town
Everybody will tell you: coming to live in Accra is a reward for expatriates. The city is very clean and has a micro-climate. You enjoy the warmth and the breeze from the sea, but it is not too hot. During the raining seasons, it rains very few times.
You land in Accra at night and you are directly under the charm. The smell of Accra is a mix of sun and fried plantain in spicy oil, with a blow of sea wind.

I have never felt as safe as in Accra. Whatever reports can say, you can walk everywhere at any time without the fear of being jacked. Accra has the lowest criminal record of the large towns in the world.
It is at the same time very large, more than 3 million inhabitants and very small, when you are there you always go to the same few places.

welcome: you feel always welcome in Accra, it is a never ending entertainment. Working in Accra is being on holidays all the time.

There is no lost time. Each instant is lived intensively, and you don't want to go to sleep because you will loose time.

"Accra, sóóó Ghana"

Accra is the capital of Ghana and is situated at the very south of the country, at the Atlantic Coast. The city has over one million inhabitants and is the absolute Center of the country. It has the nation's only international airport, it has the base of politics and it is very, very Ghana.

Accra is everything Ghana has to offer, but bigger. Every city or town in Ghana has a Tro-Tro station: Accra has at least 5 of them. Ghana is a perfect place to buy West-African handicraft, Accra has the biggest market. Traffic in Ghana is always very chaotic, Accra is the worst. Every town in Ghana has a colorful market, Accra's markets are among the biggest.

ACCRA

where my Sub-Saharan African adventure started...

My first experience arriving in Accra....
The first time when I arrived at the airport some guys of Volu (the Ghanaian Voluntary Organization) picked me up from the airport. They brought me in the dark to a secondary school where I could sleep. At the moment I arrived it was totally dark, there was no electricity and there was nobody around in the school. The guys left me there and said to me 'You are totally safe here. We will come back in the morning and show you where you are'.
I looked for a bed in one of the unlocked dormitories and tried to sleep and experienced 'how dark Africa and can be'. There was no light and no noise till in the night I heard some people walking up the stairs. They entered my dormitory with a flashlight to look who has sneaked in. I found out that they were also European volunteers just coming back home and sleeping in of the dormitories next door.

After a few weeks coming back from the voluntary project I made a lot of friends and could stay with Ghanaian volunteers and their families all over the country. So I did in back Accra and Madina just north of Accra. The hospitality of the Ghanaian people was absolutely amazing.

Accra is a

The last time in 2003 I came to Accra only for two days at the start of my Africa overland trip. In those two days I could see that since my first visits in the 1980s a lot has changed. A pity I couldn't meet any of my old friends. I knew that some moved out of the country, of some I lost the addresses and some died.

lively city. All the four times I came to Ghana I stayed in Accra for a few days or longer. The more often I came back, the more I liked the city. It's a rather easygoing place.

** Tasty Jerk, Accra

I was walking down a main road in Osu, Accra when I smelled the most wonderful smell of meat being grilled to perfection. I was actually looking for another restaurant when my nose told me to stop here and grab a table. My nose was absolutely right! Many people describe food as mouth-watering, but the very air here in this simple restaurant will literally make you salivate. I was greeted warmly and a menu was handed over and my beer arrived swiftly. As I was sitting outside I noticed that the advertising outside said “The real taste of Boston Bay Portland Jamaica”. Jerk Chicken is obviously a Caribbean dish, but these folks give it that something extra.

I ordered a combo dish with both pork (called Bra Charles in Ghana) and chicken. This was served with boiled rice covered in Kpakposhito, which is a spicy hot green pepper sauce. The sauce is a bit on the hot side, but exploding with flavour. And the meat was moist, succulent and delicious. Between using the rice and the meat being served without a sauce on it, the Kpakposhito was evened out for a perfection of flavours. Amazing.

They have a well deserved reputation for the best pork in Accra, but don’t miss out and have a combo dish like I did.
